I Am the Bread of Life
I Am the Bread of Life
“Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 (NLT)
The crowds were insistent. They had seen Jesus feed more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish. They were ready to force Him to be their king. So, He slipped away into the hills to be alone. The next day, when the crowds realized that Jesus nor the disciples were any longer there, they got into boats and went to Capernaum to look for him.
When they found Jesus, they asked “Rabbi, when did you get here?” (John 6:25) But Jesus didn’t answer them. Instead, He told them why they were looking for Him. The crowds sought Him but for all the wrong reasons. He had fed them, and they wanted more…more of what He could give but not more of Him. They wanted more miracles. They wanted more displays of His power. They wanted someone to free them from their Roman oppressors. They wanted a king.
But Jesus will upend their material desires with the spiritual. He tells them to not be so concerned with the perishable but instead to seek the eternal life that He can give. A carnal appetite will never be satisfied. It will continually seek after things of this world only to find that it is still empty of all it truly longs for.
Jesus shows them the solution to their hunger in verse 35. He says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (NLT) I AM…ego̅ eimi. I Am. I Am all that will complete you. I Am enough. I Am the only thing that will satisfy you.
The problem wasn’t that Jesus wasn’t enough. The problem was they didn’t believe Him. John 6:36 says, “But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me.”(NLT) Their unbelief kept them from experiencing the fullness of Christ. He was all they needed but they were seeking the wrong thing.
What are you seeking? Are you chasing material things that will never satisfy you? Are you trying to find fulfillment in your possessions, your beauty, your accomplishments, or others' opinions of you? Are you only seeking Jesus for what you hope He will give you?
Today, I hope you will see that He is the Bread of Life. He is where life is lived to the fullest. He is the only thing that will satisfy you. He is all you need.
